A Guide To Solo Travel in The Maldives

Solo travelling is one of the best ways of experiencing the ultimate freedom. A country such as Maldives is a true haven for soul searchers.

It is paradise on Earth, and it tries to maintain this image very well. With crime rates being relatively low in Maldives, this is the ultimate destination to embark on your solo travel journey and here are some reasons why.

Friendly locals

This would come as no surprise to anyone who have been to The Maldives or looked up Maldives on Google. Maldivians are friendly, kind hearted and welcoming. Locals take pride in tourists visiting their islands and would be more than happy to help you in any way. Also, do keep in mind that the curious stares from locals as you walk around is totally normal.

Safe stays

Safety is a priority when travelling solo. Maldives received the “Safe Travels Stamp” on September 2020 by World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) for the safety measures placed in making it a safe destination for travelers.

If you are visiting a local island, it is best to select a stay which has safety measures in place and luckily, almost all the guesthouses would have CCTV installed. However, it is best to always take safety precautions on your own, such as avoiding going alone to places late in the night.

Exotic beaches

It is no secret that the Maldives is home to idyllic beaches with crystal clear waters and white powdery sand. You can visit any of the beaches in the local islands and enjoy in the sun but just be cautious to wear appropriate clothing as you are expected to wear modest clothing in local public beaches and in the island.

However, there are bikini beaches in almost all the islands where you can lounge around in your bikinis and have fun in the sun! Resorts are specially designed for tourists, so you can roam freely around the island resorts in your preferred clothing that fits the standards placed in each resort.

English fluency

While Maldives has “Dhivehi” as the national language, English is understood and spoken by many. It would be very easy to get around since you would not experience a language barrier that often. If you would like to learn Dhivehi, you can check out our Dhivehi Lesson Videos here.

Perfect for a laidback vacay

Sure, Maldives is a great honeymoon destination, but this does not mean it is not great solo. Sunbathing on a beach while reading your favourite book and taking a nap to the sound of waves crashing against the shore sounds like a perfect therapy for the soul.

Great for the adventurer in you

Maldives is the best place for the ultimate island adventure. There are so many things to do! Diving, snorkeling, island hopping, swimming with the manta rays and sharks, whale shark spotting, visiting shipwrecks, surfing, fishing trips, water sports and the list is endless. It really comes down to your preference. One thing that is guaranteed is that it would be a whole lot of fun!

Diverse food culture

The rich Maldivian culture also features a rich cuisine. Trying Maldivian food on your Maldivian getaway is a must. Some of the food you can try are Garudhiya, Rihaakuru and Hedhika (shorteats). Read our Guide to Maldivian Cuisine here.

Mostly including seafood as its core cuisine, it is also a melting pot of fusion food and you can find that there are several Chinese, Western, Indian, Thai and Japanese restaurants to choose from.
